Why Great Leadership is Beyond Words

Do you ever leave a meeting feeling it went well only to discover later that your counterpart left feeling marginalized?

Do you ever interrupt someone to check your email messages or BlackBerry?

Your leadership abilities can be revealed in many ways, and not all of them are easy to identify. Words alone play only a very small part in establishing a positive relationship with someone else. In some cases, you are not even aware that you are in the process of negating any chance of successfully building a rapport with someone. Other times, you might be breaching some form of basic etiquette but remain oblivious to it.

Communication is half art and half science. And skillfully mastering both sides of this complicated equation is what it takes to become a true professional.

Attributes of an effective leader are conveyed through actions, but are also communicated unwittingly through gestures and body language. These inadvertent signals greatly influence how others perceive you.

Moving to a leadership position means you will be expected to deal with more people at face to face levels. But if you aren’t sure what your body language and non verbal cues (including breaches in business etiquette) are telling others, you won’t be as effective and your performance and the performance of others will suffer.

The good news is controlling body language and non verbal cues can be done. It just requires practice, knowledge and discipline.

Reposition 2010 tackles this great unspoken component of successful career development with Why Great Leadership is Beyond Words: Microinequities and Microadvantages.

The workshop focuses entirely on the identification of the subtle, unintended messages and the effect they have on commitment, loyalty and performance. The workshop includes workplace scenarios and provides exercises that explore ways messages you are not aware of are typically sent.

The program also identifies and differentiates the messages that impair performance vs. those that enhance the performance of others.

After completing the workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Identify subtle positive or negative messages in their daily interactions with others
  • Explain how negative messages can devalue, discourage and ultimately impair performance and workplace effectiveness
  • Learn how to apply positive messages to encourage optimal performance in others and drive success
  • Interpret messages that can drive changes in behavior, and apply these messages in the workplace to enhance employee performance.

Why Great Leadership is Beyond Words looks beyond traditional diversity, It gets to the DNA of a culture change by enabling people to master the skills of sending, receiving and interpreting messages that drive behavior change.

This workshop will be facilitated by Stephen Young, partner and founder of Insight Education Systems, a company specializing in leadership effectiveness and organizational development services.
