Logistics Decision Modelling
Logistics Decision Modeling is the study of the various functional relationships that exist between finance, marketing, production, transportation, inventory and quality control. This course is designed to integrate concepts learned in preceding courses. The primary area of focus is professional management report presentations on strategic management decisions using industry standard tools such as Microsoft Excel and Word.
Using readings, exercises, assignments and an exam, the course will improve the students' ability to strategize and present commercial and logistics information at "C" suite levels.
Upon completion of Logistics Decision Modeling, participants will be able to:
- Financial Statement Relationships - Understand the relationship between each of the financial statements and, using Excel, construct and integrate each of the basic financial statements.
- Allocating Scarce Resources - Learn the decision making process that factors into the allocation of scarce resources, (i.e. people, money, equipment capacity) while calculating the maximum inventory investment utilizing Excel's linear programming optimization tool.
- Financial Analysis Information - Using financial data from major Canadian rail companies, build a strong working awareness of the objectives behind financial statement analysis from the perspective of various interest groups, such as investors, creditors and managers. The learner will be using Excel to develop horizontal and vertical analysis along with producing charts and graphs to present the financial data.
- Inventory Control - Fully comprehend and articulate to management the concept of inventory as a major corporate concern. Using Excel, the learner will determine the costs of holding inventory, costs of stockouts, economic order quantity and safety stock.
- Capital Budgeting - Recognize key components related to investment in fixed assets (should a proposed project be accepted or should it be rejected?). Typically these investments involve large cash outlays at the outset and commit the firm to a particular course of action over a relatively long period of time.
- Cost-volume-profit analysis - Quickly identify CVP (cost, volume, profit) relationships between fixed and variable costs by creating one and two variable data tables for multiple "what-if"scenarios.
Prerequisites: Transportation Systems, Logistics Processes. Recommended: Financial Management or equivalent. Candidates should have a familiarity with simple algebra (ie. numerical problem-solving skills) and a basic knowledge of financial mathematics, including the ability to understand a profit and loss statement.

Transportation Economics
Transportation Economics is a senior level study of the functional relationship between domestic / international trade, transportation supply / demand and government regulation / deregulation.
The course builds upon a foundation of introductory economics principles (primarily microeconomic) and on the transportation components learned in Transportation Systems and Logistics Processes. Using practical applications, it illustrates the principles most relevant to transportation markets.
Candidates will examine the effect of government interventions and regulations, or the absence of such policies, under different economic circumstances. Finally, candidates will learn how transportation facilitates domestic and international trade, and better understand the correlation between advances in communication and the competitiveness of the transportation industry.
Although not focused on mathematical derivations, the course does require a certain level of comfort with quantitative reasoning. Students will learn the basic quantitative concepts needed to interpret empirical results from models developed by economists based on real world case studies in transportation economics.
Upon completion of Transportation Economics, participants will be able to:
- Transportation and Economy relationship: Understand the scope and breadth of transportation in Canada and its importance to the economy.
- Economic Concept Application to Transportation: Apply economic concepts such as diminishing returns, economies of scale and pricing to the transportation sector.
- Direct, Indirect and External Costs: Demonstrate the role and importance of direct, indirect and exogenous costs in determining transportation supply under competitive and regulated freight rates.
- Government Regulation/Deregulation: Identify the policy issues that confront the transportation sector, the role of government regulation and the motivation of government intervention.
- Demand/Supply Characteristics by Mode: Recognize the economic factors that impact the supply and demand characteristics of each mode of transportation.
- Transportation and Communication: Understand how advances in communication have a direct correlation to transportation efficiencies and the global economy.
