About the programs
You may recognize SmartWay and SmartDriver as programs previously administered by Natural Resources Canada (NRCan). In July 2026, parts of NRCan, including SmartWay and SmartDriver, transferred to Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC). This change is part of the Government of Canada's decision to transfer the administration of energy efficiency programs, including energy-efficient transportation programs, and energy efficiency policies from NRCan to ECCC. The goal is to better align federal climate change and emissions reduction efforts under a single department.
