HAP Transportation – Redefining Logistics Through Education and Port Solutions
We sat down with Jeff Ferguson, General Manager at HAP Transportation Group, to learn more about their organization and commitment to professional development
In an overcrowded carrier market heavily driven by commodity pricing, how can a carrier truly stand out? It is a challenge that many transport companies face as they try to look beyond the standard metrics of fleet size and terminal locations.
For the HAP Transportation Group of Companies, an asset-based carrier operating on Canada’s west coast, the answer lies in a powerful combination: a comprehensive suite of port solutions and a deep commitment to professional development.
We recently sat down with Jeff Ferguson, General Manager at HAP Transportation, to discuss how his firsthand journey through advanced logistics training is shaping the company's customer-centric approach, and how HAP is moving past the "just a trucker" narrative to foreground their offerings to the industry.
Moving Beyond "Just a Trucker"
According to Jeff, the traditional method of marketing a transportation company, listing numbers of trucks and terminals, no longer cuts it with modern logistics professionals. Today's market demands providers who understand the intricate, 360-degree reality of a shipper's entire network.
“Trucking is an incredibly crowded, commodity-driven business,” Jeff said. “If you just go to a client and say, 'We have this many trucks,' they may not be impressed . The conversation must change to: What supply chain solutions can you provide?”
”We are positioned as a comprehensive port partner. Whether a client is arranging freight from Asia or dealing with extreme port congestion, we offer a combined service model that manages import/export drayage, container yard storage and transloading into HAP highway equipment 40 ‘ HC containers and 53’ vans) destined for the Western Provinces.”
This diverse operational footprint allows HAP to step in when smaller, less-equipped operators get stuck in the highly regulated and locked-down tag systems of the Vancouver Ports , absorbing volatility and managing the container lifecycle seamlessly.
The Power of Empathy Through Education
What truly sets HAP apart in its current evolution is its approach to workforce development. HAP is entering its second year as a CITT Endorsed Business Partner—a strategy driven directly by Jeff’s personal conviction that continuous learning is vital for industry success. Jeff is not just encouraging his team to study; he is actively leading by example as a student working toward his formal professional designation, CCLMP
“I personally believe in education, and I'm a student in the program right now,” Jeff shared. “Balancing these complex courses while working full-time is a massive challenge, but what I have learned is substantial, combined with years of experience. . It has completely changed my confidence level when sitting on trucking boards, moderating major industry panels, or talking to our clients.”
This educational pathway has given HAP a unique competitive edge: the ability to see the world entirely through the customer’s eyes.
“A lot of carrier representatives look at advanced logistics material and assume it's only meant for shippers,” Jeff noted. “But taking these courses forces you out of the rigid carrier mindset. You study exactly what keeps a supply chain professional up at night. It builds a toolbox that helps us understand our customers' costs and find real ways to reduce them. It completely changes the dynamic of our conversations.”
A Two-Way Street: Industry Symbiosis
For HAP, engaging with the broader logistics community is about more than just boosting brand awareness; it is an essential investment in the health of the entire industry network. From sponsoring local events to volunteering on regional chapter boards, Jeff views corporate involvement as a shared responsibility.
“At the end of the day, local industry groups rely entirely on volunteers to keep the community thriving,” Jeff explained. “Business leaders need to step up because events simply don’t happen without sponsors and corporate backing.”
This active involvement has rapidly accelerated HAP’s visibility among high-level decision-makers, culminating in last year’s CITT Vancouver Logistics Briefing that drew over a hundred active supply chain leaders.
“We absolutely lite up LinkedIn for two days following that event,” Jeff said. “The recognition was incredible, but it happened because we contributed, volunteered, and showed up as active participants. It is a two-way street. If you want to better your supply chain, you need to have meaningful, high-level dialogues with your carriers. We are not all the same.”
Forward-Looking Solutions
By combining robust asset capability with an education-backed understanding of modern cargo movement, HAP Transportation is successfully shifting the narrative from simple hauling to strategic problem-solving. As global trade lanes face ongoing cost pressures, HAP's focus on professional competency ensures they remain a trusted, forward-thinking partner on the West Coast.
